In history it was the Protestant Reformation which called Christians
away from the traditions of the Roman Catholic church. Sola Scriptura
was the battle cry of the Protestants. Today even the Protestant
churches have accepted tradition and incorporated traditions instead of
incorporating well thought out doctrines based upon relevant Biblical
material. As traditions have become beliefs it has become difficult to
distinguishwhat is Biblically revealed
and what is merely accepted concepts based upon tradition. Tradition
that people grew up with or were taught by others once accepted the
concepts are no longer questioned.
The New Protestants are dedicated to a return to reasoned Biblical
concepts. Traditions in themselves are not bad, they have their uses.
Yet Christianity as both a Religion and a philosophy is based upon
reason. Which means we must have a reason for our beliefs? As
everything requires a presupposition the New Protestants begin with the
presupposition that the Bible contains God inspired messages to
humanity. From this standard, Christian doctrines should be developed
upon reasonable evidence. Unlike the Roman Catholic church Protestants
do not accept church mandated doctrines. This has lead to variations in
views within the Protestants churches. Though we must note that even in
the Roman Catholic church even with its claims as the sole authority
for Christian interpretation of doctrines there are still variation
within Catholicism.
